INSTRUCTIONS (for Installation and Operation)

General

  • The equipment covered by this publication must be selected for a specific application and it must be installed, operated, and maintained by qualified persons who are thoroughly trained and who understand any hazards that be involved. This publication is written only for such qualified persons and is not intended to be a substitute training and experience in safety procedures for this type of equipment.
  • J&W Open Fuse Cutouts are designed to protect equipment. A fuse cutout cannot protect personnel from injury or electrocution if contact is made with energized circuits or hardware.
  • WARRANTY QUALIFICATIONS : The standard warranty contained in seller's standard conditions of sale does not apply to J&W Open Fuse Cutouts, Outdoor Distribution when installed in conjunction with fuse tubes of other than J&W manufacture, nor does it apply to J&W fuse tubes installed in fuse cutouts of other than J&W manufacture.*
  • Installed fuse tubes should not be left in the open position for an extended period of time, since water can damage the tube lining.
  • * Current-production can be installed in conjunction with earlier-design J&W Open Fuse Cutouts. Also, superseded-design fuse tubes may be installed in conjunction with current-production J&W Open Fuse Cutouts. In either case, the ranges of the complete cutout shall be that of the fuse tube.

MOUNTING THE CUTOUT

  • Also applicable on 26.4- through 34.5- systems for protection of single-phase-to-neutral circuits(lines or transformers) only, and grounded-wye connected capacitor banks.

INSTALLING THE FUSE LINK (Cutouts Without Arc-Shortening Rod)

  • INSTALLING THE FUSE LINK (Cutouts Without Arc-Shortening Rod)

  • Do not use a standard cap in place of a cap with an arc-shortening rod. Use of the arc-shortening rod is required to achieve the interrupting rating.
  • Screw the arc-shortening rod onto the fuse link and hand tighten. Then slide this assembly, cable first, into the top of th fuse tube and retrieve the cable at the lower end. Continue with Step 3 of the preceding section.

Only qualified persons should operate, inspect, or maintain an open cutout. Such qualified persons should wear protective equipment such as rubber groves, hard hat, ... safety glasses, flash-clothes, etc., in accordance with established safely practices, and be trained in their proper care.

  • Hot gases and fuse link particles can be expelled at high velocity during interruption. When closing a fuse cutout, all personnel should be positioned well clear of its exhaust.
  • When closing an open Fuse cutout, the operator should be positioned well clear of its exhaust path.
  • OPENING THE FUSE TUBE

  • Do not attempt to open J&W Type Open Fuse Cutouts to interrupt load current, without the use of a loadbreak tool such as Loadbuster. An arc started by opening a fuse Cutouts under load without a loadbreak tool could cause injury or damage to equipment.

  • Loadbuster is ideally suited for use in opening the fuse tube of J&W Type Open Fuse Cutouts (or other cutouts and disconnects designed for use with Loadbuster). Loadbuster is unique method of providing low-cost, positive, and convenient live-switching capability for such devices. Instructions for use of Loadbuster with J&W Type Open Fuse Cutouts are below. Following an opening operation using Loadbuster, the fuse tube can be lifted out of the cutout hinge using the prong of a hookstick. See Figure 3a, 3b.

  • A fuse tube should not be left in the open position for an extended period of time, since water can damage the tube lining.
